SO VERY DIFFERENT...BUT SO ALIKE; HANGING OUT AT JUVENILE COURT 30 YEARS AGO

I'm sure you also remember people you met briefly...perhaps in an intense moment...and wonder where they are today.
**************************************************

Memphis & Shelby County Juvenile Court - Memphis, TN  About thirty years ago my women's circle from church went down to Juvenile Court to hold services...  about once a month for ten or more years.
I was around fifty on this particular day.

.

Usually I was assigned to the girls' lockup area where there were few inmates. But one day they were short on the boys' floor, so I went there to help out

We took a small keyboard; & while we were getting ready,  I looked up and saw on both sides hosts of teenage boys descending stairs. They walked with their hands behind them as instructed.

The meeting room was large and when full sort of an intimidating scene.

We had lots of singing; then a woman (who was about my age now)
gave a fiery talk to motivate them on to a better path. The boys seemed to love this grandmother figure.

Then she said, "If anyone would like for someone to pray with you, would you raise your hand; someone will come to you."

An African American who looked about 40 years old, big, strong, and very black...raised his hand. I remembered one of the policemen had warned us...not to get too close.

"Someone can grab you and hold you as a hostage!!!!!"

                                    FACSIMILE

I admit to being terrified. "D, duh, do you want someone to pray with you?" I stuttered.

He started sobbing. "I want you to pray that my momma will come down here to see me."

So I took his hand, and we prayed....about his momma and other things too.

WHAT?? Who woulda thought...His MOMMA?!!

Suddenly I could see that we were so different yet so alike!!!!.  I went to the boys' floor from then on and was never afraid again, and remembered the teenagers were in some ways...still children.
             ALL "precious in HIS sight!!!"

Yesterday during discussion time at Pastor's Bible class, I remembered this event and shared; on the way home I wondered if I had told it to bring attention to myself ?!  Hope not....not then, not now...

HANGING OUT WITH THE CHOIR AT WEDNESDAY NIGHT PRACTICE...LOVELY MUSIC BY BURYL RED!!

I so wish all of you could sneak into our Wednesday night choir practices at COLONIAL BAPTIST CHURH;

all of you, who have ever sung in choirs, know already what a bonding experience it is.  During the time you are singing, choir members feel so close.

We have the extra pleasure of having a choir director, STEPHEN LEN WHITE,

who keeps us laughing!!!
                    also a bonding experience.

Tomorrow night (7/10/2013) will be a particularly lovely time, because we will work  on music by BURYL RED, to be sung next Sunday, July 14.

                             "IN REMEMBRANCE OF ME."

                                        Buryl Red
Buryl Red, described by The Washington Post as "uncommonly creative", the musical work of Buryl Red as composer, conductor, producer, and arranger, may be experienced in such diverse venues as Carnegie Hall, Saturday Night Live, and thousands of schools, churches, and theaters around the world. His output includes more than sixteen hundred published compositions and arrangements, production of over 2500 recordings,< and the musical supervision, composition, and arranging for several hundred shows, documentaries, and musical specials for network and cable television. Several of his choral works including Celebrate Life and the first performing edition of Pergolesi's Magnificat are considered landmarks in their fields. He is the executive record producer for some of the most widely used music textbooks in the United States including the new Silver Burdett Making Music series. Born in Little Rock, Arkansas, Buryl Red is a graduate of the music schools of Baylor University and Yale University and now lives in New York City. (he died on April 3, 2013<)He has been honored with many civic and professional awards and degrees. He is particularly honored with the inclusion of his well-known song, "In Remembrance", in The African-American Heritage Hymnal published in 2001.

Our own Jamie Sinatra  plays the obligato part on his oboe...too beautiful to describe.
and as always, our genius on the piano...minus the glasses, haha... Sandy Murphree!!

Needless to say rehearsal will be yet another another wonderful time for us.

CHUCK BOHANNON WILL RECITE "RAGGED OLD FLAG" at COLONIAL BAPTIST CHURCH (7/07)

(I wrote this two years ago for 4th service....annie)

Last night at choir practice, our director STEPHEN LEN WHITE, told us that the music part of July 7, Sunday morning service would be like a bookend to our CELEBRATE AMERICA PROGRAM last Sunday.

We heard CHUCK BOHANNON (a fine singer and actor in our choir) recite RAGGED  OL' FLAG as a sneak preview to what we will hear at the 10:30 am service. It was so lovely and touching.
The choir will sing the patriotic sing-along as an encore from CELEBRATE AMERICA.

Here is Johnny Cash's rendering of RAGGED OLD FLAG>Our church loved the way Chuck did it!

RAGGED OLD FLAG is the 46th album by JOHNNY CASH released on Columbia Records in 1974

The album addresses several political as well as ethical issues. The title track is a spoken word tribute to patriotism.

Just sayin'.....annie in memphis

Now it is SUNDAY afternoon, after the morning service. July 7th. as expected CHUCK was wonderful!!! thought you would want to know. ab

HANGING OUT WITH THE CHOIR....June 23, 2013

WELL, GLORY!!

Yesterday morning there was an especially wonderful Sunday service at COLONIAL BAPTIST CHURCH...just l/2 mile from our home; there was an oboe solo, a guest tenor (from the Met) -solo, a choir presentation, a marvelous sermon by our own Dr James A.
Adams, and ending the service a duet by tenor and baritone.

Our choir sang  BOW THE KNEE.

Our choir director, STEPHEN LEN WHITE is amazing!! Here he is with his beautiful wife, Debbie.
Stephen Len White was born and raised in Memphis and graduated from Trezevant High School and Memphis State University with a Bachelor of Music (Opera Performance). He then studied in Graz,Austria and Venice, Italy. Steve's God-given voice has been heard internationally on many operatic and musical theatre stages, most notably as an original member of the third national tour of the Phantom of the Opera for six years, and then as an original company member of the Antwerp, Belgium company of Phantom.
He  has sung major roles in La BohemeLa TraviataI Pagliacci and Il Barbiere di Siviglia, appearing with companies as diverse as the New York Grand Opera, the Bronx Opera, Opera Ascona, Opera Memphis and the Auckland Opera.

White has played lead roles in The Music Man,Carousel,Camelot in addition to Phantom of the Opera.  He created the role of Gandalf in Der Herr der Ringe in Berlin.
His symphonic experience includes the Milwaukee Symphony, the Memphis Symphony and the Haifa Symphony in Israel, singing under the baton of Maestros Zubin Mehta, James Conlon and Vincent La Selva.  His film and television credits include Final Chapter Walking TallFor Love of the Game21 GramsThe Upright Citizens Brigade, and Law and Order

******All of that is for naught without a relationship with the Lord, Steve says, and he feels the most important day in his life was May 10, 1967, when shortly after his brother graduated from seminary at Baptist Bible College, Steve came to a saving knowledge of Jesus Christ as his personal Savior. ******
His resume is so impressive. But I assure you he can sing ANY KIND of song so beautifully.
Now for the first time he has become a choir director; and we can hardly believe this great blessing to us!!! Us!!!!

June 30, our choir (COLONIAL BAPTIST CHURCH,
 memphis, Quince at Colonial,)
will present CELEBRATE AMERICA...at 10:30 am. If you come, speak to me afterwards...I would be so excited if you are there.
GodBless America

HANGING OUT WITH JUDI DENCH (I wish!!)

As you can see, I ended the title of this entry with "I wish."

My life long friend, Beth Jones, ( who died a few years ago) and I loved AS TIME GOES BY.

Beth is in the center and Charlotte on left and me on right...1950 IN FRONT OF HUMES HIGH SCHOOL;
we three were born about the same time as Judi Dench, her husband, Michael Williams, and ATGB writer Bob Larbey. So we felt a time connection with them.

We watched and then discussed every episode. Bob Larbey (b.1934) is the comedy writer genius who gave us such reason to laugh. Judi Dench (b. 1934)
gives me great optimism as to what an older person CAN DO, even if I don't.
 v v

Anyway. Beth and I had heard about A FINE ROMANCE. We were not surprised that it was also written by Bob Larbey.

But we didn't know how to go about finding this earlier show. A few nights ago I saw that almost all the episodes are on You Tube. "Beth, here is what we were looking for," I exclaimed!!  Wish she and I could talk about it. But that not being possible, I am talking about it with you, dear Blog Friends.
Bob Larbey

I was sitting alone at the computer while I watched this. Then I heard myself laughing, no CACKLING, out loud when I saw this episode. I was especially happy to see her husband, Michael Williams..who plays the part of Mike so superbly.  1935-2001
Learning these renown Shakespearean actors could have such perfect timing for hilarious humor amazes me. And I was sad at the same time, because her beloved husband died 12  years ago.

Take a look.
It begins mildly funny and then gets funnier & funnier, then goes over the top in the restaurant scene, where Mike hopes to propose.

If you have any comments I would so love to hear them.

LEROY CALDWELL AND HIS WIFE, SHIRLEY, WOULD HAVE BEEN MARRIED 47 YEARS TODAY

from Shirley:
"This morning I went on the porch to have my coffee and talk with Leroy and the Lord.  I thanked God for the 46 1/2 years we had together.  Later today I read 3 letters LeRoy had written back in 1999. and 2010 and also a letter he wrote to John Paul.  He said he would be waiting for us at the left of the Eastern Gate when it is our time to come.  I know he is enjoying Heaven, as there he is everything he was meant to be."

Here are some pics of the tank top dresses we made for Ambassadors to the Nations at the last Sew & Sow.  We’ll be sending 20 in the next week or so and I still have another 25 to make.

It is so wonderful to know the Sew and Sow ladies are continuing to make dresses for little girls. Here are some of them. They make my heart glad. Love, annie

Photo: The dresses made by SEW AND SOW ladies, would not show up on the blog...but you can see them this way. Whoo hoo. Love, annie

Many viewers liked the other blog entry about this ministry....

Wonderful way to serve the Lord and to honor a wonderful man, my little brother.
